How to Get a Surety Bond in Alabama
Alabama requires surety bonds for a long list of licenses — notaries, auto dealers, HVAC contractors, roofers, auctioneers, and more. What trips people up is that Alabama's bonding rules are trade-by-trade, and a lot of what's published online is outdated or oversimplified. (One of the top-ranking national bond pages still lists the Alabama notary bond at $10,000. The real figure, since September 2023, is $50,000.)
This guide gives you the current, verified Alabama requirements, who sets them, and how to get your bond — online for straightforward bonds, or with our Orange Beach team for anything that needs underwriting.

Surety bonds in 30 seconds
A surety bond involves three parties: you (the principal), the obligee (the board, agency, or court requiring the bond), and the surety (the company backing it). If you violate the rules of your license, the obligee can claim against the bond; the surety pays valid claims, and you repay the surety. A bond is not insurance for you — it's a guarantee you give the state. (Full explainer: Surety Bonds vs. Insurance.)
You pay a premium — a percentage of the bond amount based on bond type, your credit, and for larger bonds your financials — not the full bond amount. Your exact price comes out of the application.
Alabama bonds with verified state requirements
These amounts are taken from the Alabama boards and departments that require them:
| Bond | Amount | Required by |
|---|---|---|
| Notary public bond | $50,000 | Your county probate judge (Ala. Code § 36-20-71) |
| Motor vehicle dealer bond | $50,000 (continuous) | Alabama Dept. of Revenue |
| HVAC / refrigeration contractor bond (Active status) | $20,000 | Board of Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Contractors |
| Roofer license bond | $10,000 | Home Builders Licensure Board |
| Auctioneer / apprentice auctioneer bond | $10,000 | Alabama State Board of Auctioneers |
| Service contract provider bond | $25,000 minimum | Alabama Dept. of Insurance |
Plus the local layer: Alabama cities set their own contractor license bond amounts for local licensing — Saraland and Homewood, for example, each require $10,000 — and contract (bid, performance, payment) bonds for public work are set by the project, not a fixed schedule.
The Alabama contractor question, answered honestly
Search "Alabama contractor bond" and you'll find pages implying every contractor needs one standard bond. Alabama doesn't work that way:
- General contractors (Licensing Board for General Contractors) have no standard license bond. The Board sets your bid limit from your net worth and working capital. A bond comes up only in a specific situation: if your financials don't support the bid limit you want, you may post a bond to cover the shortfall.
- Residential builders with Unlimited or Limited licenses (Home Builders Licensure Board) also have no bond — the Board uses a credit report. The exception is the Roofers License, which requires the $10,000 bond above.
- HVAC and refrigeration contractors are the big one: Active certification requires the $20,000 bond — raised from $15,000 in October 2024, so older pages may still show the old figure.

How to get your Alabama bond: 4 steps
- Pin down the requirement. Your licensing board, the Dept. of Revenue, or your county probate judge sets the bond's name, amount, and obligee. For notaries, remember the bond is approved by — and filed with — the probate judge in your county of residence.
- Apply. Most license and permit bonds can be started online: search the bond portal by state or bond name, pick your bond, and complete the application. For contract bonds and larger amounts, call 251-333-4750 — underwriting needs financials and a short review.
- Pay the premium and get your bond. Straightforward license bonds are often issued the same day. Some Alabama filings need a signed original bond form — we'll tell you which yours is.
- File it with the obligee and calendar the renewal. The bond counts only once the requiring office has it. Dealer bonds are continuous; notary bonds run with your four-year commission; trade bonds may need proof again at renewal (the HVAC board can ask for proof annually).
Bad credit? Read this before you assume no
A low score doesn't automatically disqualify you. Smaller license bonds are frequently issued with flexible credit review, and underwritten bonds weigh experience and financials alongside credit. What matters is starting early enough to work the options. More detail: Can You Get a Surety Bond With Bad Credit?
Frequently asked questions
How much does a surety bond cost in Alabama?
You pay a premium — a percentage of the bond amount — rather than the amount itself. The rate depends on the bond type, amount, your credit, and (for larger bonds) your business financials. Two people buying the same $50,000 dealer bond can pay different premiums, which is why real pricing comes from the application. See our bond cost guide.
How fast can I get an Alabama surety bond?
Many license and permit bonds are issued the same day you apply online. Bonds requiring underwriting — contract bonds, larger amounts — take longer. If a license, closing, or bid deadline is driving you, say so when you call and we'll plan around it.
Where do I file an Alabama notary bond?
With the probate judge of the county where you live. Alabama notaries are commissioned by county probate judges, and the judge must approve your $50,000 bond. Note that county processing order varies — some counties, including Baldwin and Mobile, handle steps in a specific sequence, so check your probate office's instructions. I'm a contractor. Do I really not need a state bond?
For general contracting and most home builder licenses, correct — Alabama uses financial measures instead. But your trade board (HVAC, roofing), your city, or a project owner may still require one. If someone with authority over your work has asked for a bond, treat that as the requirement and bring us the document.
Does a bond protect my business if something goes wrong?
No — a surety bond protects the obligee and the public. If you want protection for your own business against employee theft, that's a fidelity bond, which works differently. We cover both; our fidelity bond guide explains the difference.
Do you handle Mississippi bonds too?
Yes — we're licensed in Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. Mississippi readers: How to Get a Surety Bond in Mississippi.
